arlanda express stockholm sweden
1. Transport from and to the airport Arlanda Stockholm   The Arlanda airport lies 44 km outside Stockholm. The most efficient way to go to the city center of Stockholm is to take the Arlanda Express, the journey will take you only 20 minutes and brings you to the central station of Stockholm. From this point you can take the bus or subway to your destination. Tickets can be bought at the ticket machine in the hall of the airport in front of the luggage belt. See also https://www.arlandaexpress.com. You can find the Arlanda express station down under the airport by taking the escalator. During summertime they have special offers, we only paid 300 SEK (2016) for a return ticket.

2. Public transport The Public transport is well organized and clean in Stockholm. One can choose between the subway (Tunnelbana), the bus or tram. Another possibility is to rent a bike or just walk because the city center is not too big. When you want to visit attractions that are further away from the city center, we advise you to take the subway, tram or bus. Stockholm offers also another possibility, this is the boat or ferry to one of the many surrounding islands or just make a tour around the main islands. Ask for more details at the ticket information desk at the corner of the Nybrokajen.

We bought a card for 72 hours for the subway at Information desk on the airport. Some of the subway stations are decorated by artists and you are almost sorry to see your train arriving at the platform because there is so much to explore down there.

3. Money and the Bank The Banks are open from Monday to Friday from 9.30 to 15.00 hrs. On the site https://nearest.cash/en one can see where all the ATM machines are in Stockholm. The currency in Sweden is the Swedish Krona (SEK). They are available in banknotes of 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 SEK and the coins are available in 1, 5 and 10 SEK and 50 öre.
4. More about Sweden Sweden is a constitutional monarchy in which the King has only a ceremonial function. The country has almost 10 million inhabitants most of which live in the three main cities in the south Stockholm, Malmö and Göteborg. The Swedes are descendants of the Vikings. After many centuries of wars and conflicts, the Swedes remain neutral since 1814. In the beginning of the 20th century one third of the population emigrated to the US. In the past decades many people from East Europe, the Middle East and Somalia immigrated into Sweden (around 1 million). There lives a nomadic tribe called the Sami in the northern part of Sweden, Norway, and Finland. They follow the trail of their reindeer herds. Besides reindeer there also live wolves and bears in Sweden. Today Sweden is one of the richest, most prosperous and developed countries in the world. It is well known for their progressive social system, IKEA, H&M, Volvo and winning the European Song Festival/Contest. The music industry is a serious business in Sweden with special schools and education, so talent can be discovered and developed f.i. ABBA, Roxette, Avicii and many others.
5. Shops In the old center of Gamla Stan one can find typical tourist shops. The main shopping streets in Stockholm are Drottninggatan, Hamngatan, Kungsgatan and Klarabergsgatan. In the district Östermalm you will find the more high end shops. During our stay, we discovered that Södermalm has also a very nice shopping center, this is concentrated around Götgatan. The shops are open on Monday to Friday from 10.00 to 6.00 pm hrs and on Saturday and Sunday from 10.00 until 3.00 pm hrs. In the winter time the shops are open until 5.00 pm. The supermarkets are open every day until 9.00/10.00 pm.
6. Climate The best time to visit Stockholm is May to September. In the winter months the temperature will drop below zero. The frozen water of the surrounding lakes gives the city a fairytale atmosphere especially the weeks before Christmas.

7. What we have noticed in Stockholm Stockholm has many interesting museums (museet). There is a high density of beautiful blonde women according to my husband. The water of the surrounding lakes and Baltic sea gives Stockholm a kind of freshness and openness. Stockholm is a great place for practicing outdoor sports, like hiking, swimming, sailing, canoeing, running and biking. In wintertime it is also possible to go skiing in the surrounding area of the city. REA means Realisation = SALE this takes place from mid of July to mid of August.
